King David's consolation

King David’s accomplishments:

·         Avenges Saul and Jonathon’s death

·         Becomes king of Judah

·         Unites all of Israel under him

·         Conquers the Jebusites

·         Conquers the Philistines

·         Establishes Jerusalem as his capital

·         Brings the ark of the covenant to the city of David (reestablishing the worship of the Lord to the general population)

·         Defeats many nations

Despite all of David’s successes, he is not allowed to build a temple to the Lord...because of all of his successes. The Lord basically tells him that he has too much blood on his hands.

BUT, the Lord tells david that one of his son’s will be able to build a temple (we learn in 1 Chronicles that it’s Solomon), and he’s promised that his throne will be established forever.

“And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever (2 Samuel 7:16).”

This verse is also a Messianic prophecy, as Christ is descended through David’s line.

David responds with gratitude. He seems overjoyed at the promise of continuance for his line. I wonder if he fully understood that the Savior would be born through his seed…
